WORKFIELD
- June 2010

Now that the fine tuning of the new residence of Combined Traders is coming to an end, we are proud to show you a preview of the results. We designed a continuously curved desk made of corrugated carton as an artificial landscape creating conditions for different kinds of behaviour and experience, allowing each user to personalise their environment. Boundaries dissolve between home & work and fun and functionality stimulating levels of productivity, social exchange and communication.

CRISIS-PROOF
- June 2010

We are initiating a unique experiment in low cost apartment building in Almere for a self-organised housing collective in which home ownership is combined with home rental and collective spaces. By teaming up with a construction company and the municipality during the design process, without the intermediate position of a real-estate developer, we manage to keep construction and developing costs to a minimum. We think this is an interesting crisis-proof economic model of housing development with a huge social potential.

- June 2010

How to design a wall that can transform into kitchen, wine bar, mailing room, print room, cloakroom and coffee corner? Take a look at this Service Wall made out of MDF and Corrugated carton. We are increasingly interested in the application of the philosophy of the Swiss Knife to architecture which is not only practical and cost effective in use but also adds an element of shear fun to the daily activities on the work floor.

domestic landscapes interviews
- December 2009

In 2009 we shot a series of interviews with emerging architects in Tokyo, Porto and Barcelona in which we discussed the effects of emerging urban conditions on the design of private housing. Our own work was used to illustrate the ideas.

The interview series will be published on-line in spring.

HET NATIONALE BALLET: NIEUWLICHTERS - April 2009
Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam: April 29th, May 1st, May 2nd 2009

We hereby invite you to come and see the interdisciplinary dance performance Nieuwlichters, for which Marc Koehler Architects has co-developed the visual concept with Sticky. The performance exists out of 5 works for 5 young choreographers of the Dutch National Ballet. MK and Sticky developed an innovative concept for interactive video-projections for the choreographer Juanjo Arques in his piece ‘Behavioural Patterns’.
To order tickets, please go to order tickets... or call +31 (20) 624 23 11

‘Behavioural Patterns’.

Choreography: Juanjo Arques (HNB), Visual concept: Marc Koehler & Juanjo Arques. Motion graphics: Sticky co. & Marc Koehler Architects, Music: Thijs Kallenbach.

This interdisciplinary dance project explores the interaction between dance, motion graphics, light and music in a live performance.

The collaboration across choreography, spatial design, and dynamically- generated graphics explores a dialogue between dance and its projected image, registered by a camera from a bird's-eye perspective, revealing the patterns underlying the choreography of Juanjo Arques. Tracking the network of movements across time exposes the fourth dimension of the dance experience.

In creating new modes of performance and representation for the global century, Arques, Marc Koehler Architects and Sticky underscore the role ballet plays as a model and metaphor for social behavior. Both the choreography and the specially designed motion- tracking effects were inspired by complex networks of movement and interaction related to the contemporary city.

Previous works from Arques explored social contact as a concept in dance, In this piece, his interest focuses on the possibilities of a creative tension between pattern and geometry on one side, and the complexities of free-expression and form on the other.

As an architect and lecturer at TUDelft, Marc Koehler is involved in the research of complex systems of urban behavior, identity and communication.

Sticky, a leading creative agency in the area of interactive & motion media, developed the dynamic graphic generation system for the project.

HET NATIONALE BALLET - 29 April,1, 2 May 2009
This inter-disciplinary dance project explores the space between dancers, moving image, stage-set design, light and audio in an interactive live performance.

It explores a dialogue between dance and its projected image, as seen observed by a camera from birds-eye perspective, revealing graphic patterns underlying the choreography of Juanjo Arques as a network of movements. In doing so, a 4th dimension is added to the dance experience. The projection of movement on a vertical plane enables the understanding of time in space as a critical part of the performance.

Both the choreography and the specially designed motion-tracking effects were inspired by complex forms of social network behavior as a representation of the essence of the contemporary city.

Previous works of Arques, explored the concept of ‘contact’ in dance. In this piece, his interest focuses on the possibilities of a creative tension between pattern and geometry on one side and the complexities of free-expression and form on the other.

As an architect and lecturer at TUDelft, Marc Koehler is involved in the research of complex systems of urban behavior, identity and communication. The project is developed in close collaboration with Sticky; a leading creative agency with studios in Amsterdam and Portland, serving clients all over the world. They work in the development and design of interactive media and developed the complex technical interface for this project.
